Whitchurch Hospital

Friends of Forest Farm have started a late campaign againt the NHS Trust after a planning extension has gone before the councils planning committee for houses to be built on the meadows of Whitchurch Hospital, threatening Forest Farm which is Cardiff’s largest Nature Reserve.

At a planning meeting a few weeks ago the planning committee met objections from Whitchurch Councillor Linda Morgan with petitions from local residents and another when from when Jonathan Morgan was AM. Current AM Julie Morgan also made some comments which can all be read on the Friends of Forest Farm website.

A decision was made for a site visit which is happening this Monday, January 30th at 1.15pm starting at the Hospital entrance on Park Road.

The planning report suggests that 300 new houses will create a “28 peak time vehicle movements” and that the traffic on Park Road and Pendwyallt Road has been on a steady decline since 1991.
I’m not sure what planet they are on but it must be on a planet where you don’t have to drive through Whitchurch to get to it as the whole highways system in the village is at breaking point at any time of the day.

Friends of Forest Farm have got an email of support from BBC Nature presenter Iolo Williams and are urging members of the public to attend the meeting on Monday to show their support to the campaign.

This is just another example of Cardiff County Council trying to steam-roll a major development without proper research and public consultation.
The council say 270 letters were sent out to surrounding streets – less than 3% of the population of Whitchurch and it is quite obvious that a development of this size will impact all the residents.
One might also ask the question where the children of the new homes might go to school….but as we know that’s a whole other story.

There are so many reasons why this will have a negative impact on Whitchurch.
Aside from the adjacent nature reserve: developers current preference for high density, brutalist, dehumanising housing schemes (see picture above); loss of open green space in an already overcrowded village; lack of facilities for more residents.
Those “traffic movement” figures also need close scrutiny. Do the Council honestly believe that within 300 households only 28 “traffic movements” will be created at peak times? Will the people who live there not be expected to work? Or travel to schools? (Even walking or cycling would count as a traffic movement!) Maybe the Council expects residents to have a rota system that only allows them to exit the proposed estate at certain times?
“and that the traffic on Park Road and Pendwyallt Road has been on a steady decline since 1991.”…that statement alone shows that either someone isn’t doing their job properly or the Council is, yet again, propogating mis-information in attempt to get its way.

Completely agree with you and Geoff. Just a crazy notion and crazy statements re traffic especially.
Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be able to attend the site visit on Monday due to work – I’m hoping there’d be another meeting about this as I’m sure I’m not the only one in this position..?

I’m afraid that is unlikely as it’s already gone through consultation. This site visit has only been granted after a councillor requested it. Unless a mircale happens on monday, this will be granted.

Well, the renewal of the Planning Application was approved by the Council. A vote of 5 to 3. Our local Councillors and others voiced strong opposition, but unfortunately the actions of hypercritical, neighbouring Councillors helped to swing the vote.

It may be worth reminding Independent Councillor for Rhiwbina, Adrian Robson of his words at a Council meeting on the Local Development Plan in March 2011…

“The LDP report has as an objective that Cardiff is a great place to live, work and play. I worry that if this LDP is messed around with, Cardiff won’t be a great place to live because there will be no green spaces and it will be like living in student accommodation and then not a great place to live, work and play.”

    Explain yourself Mr Robson….
